Trump Demands Ilhan Omar Resign Over 'Fake Name' Claim — Her Office Calls It 'Completely False'

President Donald Trump has called on Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota to resign from Congress, accusing her of being sworn in under a false name — an allegation her office flatly denies.

Trump made the demand on Thursday, October 22, at a rally in Iowa and in a post on Truth Social, after a Fox News Digital report cited unnamed sources, including a law enforcement source, claiming Omar’s legal name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi rather than Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.

“It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar, the one she used to get elected and sworn into Congress,” Trump said at the rally, according to reports of his remarks. “She used a fake name to be sworn in. I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress.”

In his Truth Social post, Trump went further, claiming Omar had “openly admitted to FRAUD” and urging House Speaker Mike Johnson to treat her seat as vacated.

The claim traces to an October 21 filing by the office of U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro, which sought to keep materials from a federal search warrant for Omar’s Washington home sealed. In that filing, prosecutors referred to the congresswoman as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The filing, first obtained by Fox News, did not explain why the alternative name was used, and it did not establish that Omar had committed fraud.

Omar’s office rejected the report outright. “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name,” a spokesperson told Fox News Digital, calling the allegation a “desperate smear” intended to distract from Trump and Republican governance.

The dispute comes amid a wider federal investigation into Omar’s immigration and citizenship records. Federal agents searched her Washington home on October 12, and prosecutors have since issued grand jury subpoenas to relatives. Officials have said the probe is examining possible false statements in immigration paperwork. Omar has not been charged with a crime, and no court has found that she used a fraudulent identity to take office.

Trump also revived a longstanding and repeatedly denied claim about Omar’s personal history, noting that the surname Elmi is shared by her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Omar has repeatedly denied allegations that she married her brother.

Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th District, was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, came to the United States as a refugee in 1995, and was first elected to Congress in 2018. She is running for re-election this year, with the midterms set for November 3. A president cannot unilaterally remove a member of Congress; expulsion requires a two-thirds vote of the House.
