Judge Orders Trump Administration to Cancel $20M Taxpayer-Funded TV Ads

A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to cancel all remaining taxpayer-funded television ads promoting the president — a $20 million campaign that aired on network and cable TV in recent weeks.

U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Rochon of the Southern District of New York issued a 14-day temporary restraining order on Sunday night, Oct 11, directing the administration to pull the remaining ad spots.

The Department of Homeland Security spent $20 million in taxpayer money on the ads, which began airing in late September during programs including Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and Fox NFL broadcasts.

The lawsuit was brought by a coalition including the nonpartisan watchdog Common Cause (represented by Democracy Forward), which argued the spending violated the federal ban on using appropriated funds for "publicity or propaganda."

The Justice Department argued the order was unnecessary because the ads were scheduled to end on Sunday anyway. Judge Rochon rejected that argument, ordering that any remaining spots be canceled regardless.

President Trump has said future ads will be paid for by his MAGA Inc. super PAC — but taxpayers will not be reimbursed for the roughly $19 million already spent.
