Hegseth Gives Iran a Stark Choice: Abandon Nuclear Ambitions at the Table or Face "Devastation"
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Saturday that Iran must give up its "nuclear ambitions" through a negotiated deal — or face devastating American military action.
"Iran's going to have a choice to make real quick about whether they're going to give those up at the table or face the kind of devastation that America can bring and will bring swiftly if necessary," Hegseth told Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadets and military recruits at the University of Tennessee.
The Warning
The defense secretary accused Tehran of building a large conventional missile arsenal to deter military action while continuing to pursue nuclear weapons. He argued that U.S. military strength was essential to forcing adversaries to negotiate, framing the Iran policy as part of President Trump's wider effort to reassert American power worldwide.
Hegseth also accused Iran of funding proxy forces across the region — "funds the proxies in Hezbollah, funds the proxies in the Houthis in Yemen" — and said Washington had sought to deter attacks on U.S. forces and commercial shipping.
Escalation on Multiple Fronts
The remarks come amid sharply rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. Earlier this week, the Trump administration has kept pressure on Iran over its nuclear program, missile capabilities, and support for armed groups in the Middle East.
Hegseth framed the pressure campaign as part of a broader strategy that also includes confronting drug cartels and limiting the influence of Iran, China, and Russia in Latin America. Referring to Venezuela, he said the U.S. operation there would have "generational implications," describing the country as a strategic partner and highlighting its oil resources.
Blockade Tightens
Separately, U.S. Central Command said it has redirected 138 commercial vessels since the naval blockade on Iran resumed on July 14, in a post on X late Saturday. The command said the USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) is transiting regional waters in support of the blockade against Iranian ports.
The hardened rhetoric from the Pentagon chief lands just weeks before the U.S. midterm elections, with the administration facing questions about whether the escalating pressure campaign on Iran will translate into higher energy prices and shipping costs for American consumers.
